Careful what you wish for

It was late in the evening when the conversation came around to growing old and dying.
“I don’t think I want to live to be a hundred,” my friend confided.
“A hundred?” I scoffed. “I’m looking forward to my billionth birthday. That will be a milestone worth celebrating!”
“Really?” incredulity in her voice. “Why? Imagine being the last to go… everyone you knew and loved long dead. Your children, their children…”
“Because I want to know how the story ends,” I replied.
“What story?”
“History.”
I don’t say that any more, even in jest. This year has made me realise just how easily I might yet get my wish… just not in the way my younger self envisioned.
